## What the chart shows

The Anthropic Economic Index classifies Claude.ai conversations as automation, where the user has Claude complete a task, or augmentation, where the user works through it with Claude. Automation rose from 41% of conversations in January 2025 to 49% in August, when it exceeded augmentation (47%) for the only time in the four releases.

By November automation had eased to 45% and augmentation was back ahead at 52%. The AI Index reads the rise in automation as consistent with organisations’ early adoption of AI agents.

- Shares of sampled Claude.ai conversations in four Anthropic Economic Index releases (data for January, March, August and November 2025). Anthropic publishes this index about the use of its own product.
- The two modes add to 96% or 97%; the rest of conversations are not assigned to either mode in the data.
- The releases are unevenly spaced; the axis spaces them evenly.
