20162025

## What the chart shows

Across G20 member countries, 11 AI-related bills were passed into law in 2025, down from 16 in 2024, the highest yearly count in the data. No AI-related laws are recorded for 2016.

Over 2016–2025, 94 laws passed in total. The yearly count rose from 4 in 2017 to 13 in 2020 and has stayed between 11 and 16 since. The AI Index notes that an omnibus law with many AI provisions counts once, and that the number of laws says nothing about their weight.

## How to read it

- Counts bills passed into law, not proposed or pending bills, found by Digital Policy Alert’s legislation tracker and checked by the AI Index team.
- The method changed from the 2025 AI Index, so numbers differ from last year’s report.
- The yearly counts add up to 94, while the country totals in the [related chart](https://aiadoption.org/data/ai-laws-by-g20-country/) add up to 96\. The AI Index does not explain the difference.
