## What the chart shows

Epoch AI counts 85 public or public-private AI supercomputers in China by 2025, the most of any region and as many as Europe and Central Asia (44) and North America (41) combined. China had 18 in 2018.

Europe and Central Asia grew fastest over that period, from 3 to 44, which the AI Index links to programmes such as the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. North America went from 6 to 41 and East Asia and the Pacific (excluding China) from 7 to 27\. Latin America and the Caribbean (8), the Middle East and North Africa (3) and South Asia (2) remain small.

## How to read it

- Counts large GPU clusters used to train advanced AI models that are state-owned or built in public-private partnership, as tracked by Epoch AI, cumulative by year. Privately owned clusters, which hold most AI computing capacity, are not counted.
- The AI Index treats this as a proxy for sovereign high-end AI compute, not a full measure of national computing capacity. Planned systems are not included.
- China is shown separately from East Asia and the Pacific; the United States is part of North America.
