## What the chart shows

California received $2.4 billion in US federal AI-related grants over 2013–2024, 15% of the $15.7 billion total. Massachusetts ($1.3 billion) and New York ($1.2 billion) were next, then Pennsylvania ($981 million) and Texas ($907 million).

Grants are spread more widely than contracts: the top three states took 31% of grant spending, against 51% of contract and OTA spending ([related chart](https://aiadoption.org/data/us-ai-contract-spending-by-state/)). The AI Index links the wider spread to where federally funded research institutions are.

## How to read it

- Nominal US dollars: the AI Index does not say the figures are adjusted for inflation. Includes the District of Columbia.
- The AI Index text says the top three states took less than 16% of grant spending; the data gives 31% (California alone has 15%), which we use.
- Shows the top 15; choose All 51 to see every state and DC.
