What the chart shows

China overtook Europe in 2021 and has published the largest share of AI research every year since. In 2024 it accounted for 17.8% of all AI publications, ahead of Europe (11.1%), India (7.6%) and the United States (7.3%).

Those 2024 shares are all depressed by a jump in publications with no identifiable country, from 20.6% to 39.2%, which the AI Index attributes to changes in metadata coverage. Counting only papers with a known country, China’s 2024 share is about 29%, Europe’s 18%, India’s 12.5% and the US’s 12%.
