AI Progress

How capable AI has become, who builds it and the research behind it.
AI systems are closing in on people on the tests built to measure them: the best SWE-bench Verified score reached 98.7% of the human baseline in 2025, up from 64.3% a year earlier. Companies, not universities, now build almost all notable models (92% in 2025), and the US produced 64 of them to China's 35. Research keeps growing too, with 258,000 AI papers published in 2024.
