OpenAI's reported compute spend in 2025
20222025

What the chart shows

OpenAI spent a reported $16.3 billion on compute in 2025, according to figures compiled by Epoch AI, 2.8 times the $5.8 billion of 2024. Anthropic’s compute spend rose from $2.5 billion to $6.8 billion over the same year.

OpenAI’s 2025 spend split almost evenly between research and development ($8.3 billion) and inference ($8.0 billion), the cost of running models for users. Anthropic spent $4.1 billion on R&D and $2.7 billion on inference. The earliest figures, $416 million for OpenAI in 2022 and $285 million for Anthropic in 2023, are not broken down.

How to read it

  • Compute spend as reported by the companies or in media coverage, compiled by Epoch AI. The AI Index notes that it largely reflects rented cloud capacity rather than owned data centres.
  • Each total adds the R&D, inference and unattributed amounts in the data; Anthropic’s 2024 total of $2.5B is $1.5B of R&D plus $1B not attributed to either.
  • There is no 2023 figure for OpenAI and no 2022 figure for Anthropic; the OpenAI line joins 2022 and 2024.
  • Nominal US dollars.
