9.4 GW
power demand of complete AI systems shipped in 2023–2024, above Austria (7.2 GW) and Finland (9.0 GW)
What the chart shows
The 9.4 GW drawn by complete AI systems shipped in 2023 and 2024 exceeds the national electricity demand of Austria (7.2 GW), Switzerland (6.5 GW) and Finland (9.0 GW). AI accelerator modules alone draw 5.2 GW.
Bitcoin mining draws about twice as much (19.9 GW), and data centres worldwide, excluding crypto, about 47.4 GW, slightly more than France (46.8 GW).
Key numbers
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| All data centres (excl. crypto) | 47.4 GW |
| France | 46.8 GW |
| Bitcoin mining | 19.9 GW |
| All-in AI systems | 9.36 GW |
| Austria | 7.19 GW |
| AI accelerator modules | 5.24 GW |
How to read it
- The source labels this axis “thousands of megawatts”, which is gigawatts.
- AI figures cover hardware shipped in 2023–2024 only; national figures are average electricity demand.
