What the chart shows
The Anthropic Economic Index classifies Claude.ai conversations as automation, where the user has Claude complete a task, or augmentation, where the user works through it with Claude. Automation rose from 41% of conversations in January 2025 to 49% in August, when it exceeded augmentation (47%) for the only time in the four releases.
By November automation had eased to 45% and augmentation was back ahead at 52%. The AI Index reads the rise in automation as consistent with organisations’ early adoption of AI agents.
