What the chart shows

Among AI projects with at least 10 stars, the United States still has the largest share, 31.7% in 2025, but it has fallen steadily from 75.3% in 2011 as developers elsewhere joined the platform.

The rest of the world grew to 27.6%. Europe has held at about a quarter (24.5%). China’s share peaked at 14.5% in 2020 and was 11.0% in 2025; India’s rose to 5.2%.

How to read it

  • Location comes from developers’ GitHub profiles or IP addresses. For China and Hong Kong the AI Index now uses self-reported profile locations, because VPN use made IP-based location unreliable.
  • GitHub is less used in China than domestic platforms such as Gitee, so China’s share understates its open-source activity.
