What the chart shows

In McKinsey’s 2025 State of AI survey, 88% of respondents said their organisation used AI in at least one business function, up from 78% in 2024 and 20% in 2017. The share saying their organisation regularly used generative AI rose from 71% to 79%, and from 33% in 2023, the first year shown.

The rise was not steady: the AI share fell from 58% in 2019 to 50% in 2020, and was 50% again in 2022, before reaching 55% in 2023 and jumping in 2024. These are shares of survey respondents, not of companies; the 2025 survey drew 1,993 participants in 105 countries.
