8
vehicle-to-vehicle intersection crashes with an injury for Waymo, against 198 for the human-driven benchmark

What the chart shows

Waymo compares its rider-only crash record with a benchmark of how many crashes average human drivers would have over the same miles and areas. Through September 2025, Waymo reported 94 crashes with any injury, against 501 for the benchmark, about 81% fewer.

The largest gap is in vehicle-to-vehicle crashes at intersections: 8 for Waymo against 198. Front-to-rear collisions are Waymo’s most common type, 44 against 76. The figures are Waymo’s own, and the AI Index advises reading them with that in mind.

How to read it

  • V2V means vehicle-to-vehicle; F2R is front-to-rear.
  • The human-driven benchmark estimates the crashes average human drivers would have over the same miles and areas, using Waymo’s published method.
  • Data are from Waymo’s own safety reporting through September 2025.
