What the chart shows
Lightcast groups AI skills into ten clusters. The broadest, artificial intelligence, appeared in 1.7% of all US job postings in 2025, almost twice its 0.9% share in 2024. Machine learning was second at 1.0%, up from 0.8%, and generative AI rose from 0.2% to 0.4%.
The AI agents cluster, added to Lightcast’s AI skill list this year, grew fastest: from 0.06% of postings in 2024 to 0.23% in 2025, overtaking natural language processing (0.22%). Eight of the ten clusters reached their highest share in 2025; autonomous driving and visual image recognition stayed below their peaks of 2023 and 2022.

How to read it
- Shares are of all US job postings, not of AI job postings. A posting can list skills from several clusters, so the shares overlap and should not be added up.
- The AI agents cluster was added to Lightcast’s AI skill list in this edition; the AI Index shows it back to 2010.
- Lightcast revises historical counts, so earlier values may differ from previous AI Index editions.
